Emaline smiled cheerfully. “You do. My brother? I’m sure you’ve already figured that out yourself. You seem quite clever.” She grinned. “Emaline Holmes, Sergeant. Younger sister to the infamous Sherlock Holmes and Government official Mycroft Holmes.” She introduced herself, sticking her hand out.

“Hm.” She’d never been described as ‘clever’ by a Holmes before. Their view of intelligence tended to be somewhat skewed. Yes, she understood that having an IQ as tremendous as that might make you regard the majority of society as lesser but she saw no need for it to turn them into completely selfimportant prats. Especially Sherlock, lording his knowledge of people’s private lives over their head all the time.

image

“Thank you.”

She shook her hand with a surprised smile. Where had they been hiding this one?

“Sally Donovan. Pleasure.”

Emaline grinned. “You’re welcome. Lovely to meet you, Sally.” She nodded. “I’m sure you’re a bit confused, considering you probably had the pleasure of dealing with my brother.” She gave her a soft laugh. “I know how they can be. They were a lot like that when they were younger. Perhaps a bit more…humble…but still.” She smiled with a shrug. “Yes I am really their sister. Same mum and father. I just was the one who didn’t fit in quite right.” Emaline explained. “Believe it or not, I was the odd one.”

image

"Oh, I’d believe it," she laughed, bemused. She hadn’t met Mister Mycroft Holmes in person, but she’d heard complaint from all sides regarding his ways. Even Sherlock had complained about his ‘overbearing fat brother’ directly to her which had been an… interesting experience. Nevertheless.

Wherever did you get that idea? Eyeballs in the microwave, really.

Supposedly. We don’t call you for the boring ones, we can solve those ourselves.

But you do. Or rather you call me for the boring ones you lot still can’t solve.

image

And despite what you want to think, without my experiments I wouldn’t know half of what I do about crime.

'Despite what I think'. Nice

Then please do explain to me the point of microwaving eyes. Shall you give me the treatises in the car?

Go get me a coffee and I’ll let you hide under the desk.

Real coffee or crappy coffee from the Yard’s coffee machine? *Smiles*

Oh, well, my preference will always be real coffee, but if that’s too far for you to go with the fear of being discovered…

[Hanging just outside, leaning against the car’s frame in the open door.]

This might just be a policewoman thing, but I’m not terribly fond of entering strange cars on a whim. Where are we going?

My office. There are questions about the events surrounding the attempted arrest and questioning of Mister Sherlock Holmes for the kidnapping of the Ambassadors children.

And these questions can’t be taken care of in an official capacity? The inquiry is still running through the higher ups- this is a matter of internal affairs, I’m not exactly supposed to talk about it with- I’m sorry, who do you work for?

Detective Inspector Lestrade is out. I saw him leave as I came in.

I suppose I’ll have to stick around for an hour or two. My brother’s on a case, I know that, so he’s bound to return here at some point.

[Muttering] If only to tell us how obvious it was and how wrong we were about the suspects.

[Clearly] Can I get you a chair, sir? Would you like to wait in Lestrade’s office?

If I’m honest, I’m fine with waiting anywhere where I have access to a table and a cup of tea - the cup of tea part especially.

[She arched an eyebrow. This was a police station, did he really- well fine.] The break room’s just through the corridor on your left, sir, I’m sure you’ll find some tea bags and hot water in there.

“I was just about to go on lunch, can it wait?”

"It might be better to grab lunch on the way. Someone called in with a suicide-homicide but the constable on scene said there isn’t a weapon on scene."

Well, ah- I can’t help you there. Sorry. Have you tried phoning John?

Doctor Watson is angry at me because of various reasons right now. He won’t help me.

I see. You can always ask Lestrade to give him a call. I’m surprised you don’t try to locate the GPS in his phone.

“Oh, Hello. I don’t think I’m in need of any help…” Her eyes scanned over her. “But that is your job. Helping. Do you work for the Yard? You hold yourself like an officer…no… sergeant. Do you know my brother?”

Sally frowned faintly- not angrily but perplexed- cocking her head to the side. Yes. Good. She wasn’t in uniform, of course, she wasn’t that kind of policewoman, but she did have her badge, so.

‘Do you know my brother’ was an interesting one. Did her brother work at New Scotland Yard? The woman could recognize her as a yarder because she’d seen her around but that wouldn’t explain knowledge about her rank. Or an outside consu-

Oh. No. Surely not. She was much too friendly for that, wasn’t she? Sally sighed. The eldest Holmes brother was as cool and demeaning as Sherlock. But maybe a ‘woman’s charm’ or whatever excuses people came up with. She was the youngest, maybe that had helped.

“That entirely depends, miss. Who’s your brother?”

Then why else are you dallying about and not telling me about the possible case?

Last time I told you about the case you said I gave you all the wrong information and stormed out.

You know there’s a case, then, put your damn coat on.

image

image

Oh.

[Not entirely unlike him. So he let it go and got to his feet with a bit of an energetic hop to fetch his coat and mobile—heading right out the door to go catch a cab for the yard.]
